Filippo Vadi – Chapter 2: Weapon Design for the Longsword

Vadi is quite explicit in his weapon design:

  • Total length = Distance from the ground to the armpit
  • Handle Length: The span of the hand – looks like wrist to fingertip in the drawings
  • Cross-guard Width: Same as the handle + pommel
  • Cross-guard Style: Square stock with sharp points for use in attacking
  • Edge: Sharpened to the width of four fingers from the tip if used for armored combat
  • Pommel: Round so that it fits comfortably in the closed hand. – the left hand usually holds the pommel, not the handle

  1. Grauenwolf says:

Handle Length could also be a palmo, the distance between the thumb and pinky when fully splayed.
