Talhoffer 1467, Plate 5

This plate is used to illustrate countering a Oberhau with a Zwerch. Since we already discussed this action in plate 4, I want to focus on plate itself.

According to Mark Rector’s translation, the cut is to the throat. But the plate clearly shows the cut landing against the side or back of the neck. Meanwhile the incoming cut looks to ruin our fencer’s right hand.

If we separate the fencers by a pace or two, all these problems go away. The Zwerch ruins the throat and the Oberhau is caught on the strong rather than the handle.
