Features of the guard as per the illustration

  • Hand is turned to that the palm is down
  • Quillons are vertical
  • Sword arm is fully extended
  • The point is aimed well above the head
  • Hilt is slightly above the head
  • Head is slightly lowered
  • Off hand is extended forward nearly to the wrist
  • The body is leaning forward so that right shoulder is above the front foot
  • The left leg is almost straight
  • The right leg is somewhat bent
  • The feet are nearly in line. The right heel would barely graze the left if slid straight back.
  • The rear foot is angled forward

Features of the guard as per the text

  • Hand is turned to that the outside is above and the inside below
  • Extended arm
  • Head bowed so that you can see under the opponent’s blade
  • The point is aimed at the face or somewhat higher
  • The body is low with the right knee bent
  • The left leg is almost stiff
  • The left hand is near the face, ready to grab a deflect a thrust or grab a blade
